I don’t know about you, but for years prior to the COVID – 19 pandemic I took life for granted. I lived a fast-paced blessed life with work, family responsibilities, volunteer work, fitness routines and with a certain sense of unabashed self-importance. I never imagined that the day would come when I would have to bow out gracefully and take a seat in the bleachers. I never realized that one day I would be cheering and praying for those who have proven themselves to be the most important players during this crisis. I am referring to those people many of us have taken for granted in the past; grocery store clerks, custodial staff, bus drivers, police officers, teachers, health care workers, doctors, nurses and the list goes on and on. The ones who are holding this thing called life together, the ones who are risking their lives for humanity. I think I’ll officially retire my imaginary self importance cape and persona and bow and give thanks to the ones who deserve our utmost respect and thanks.
There is nothing that I have done in my life that compares to what these individuals have been doing on a daily basis. Often risking not only their lives but also the lives of their family members and those they hold most dear to their hearts. They are fighting the battle on our behalf, and I for one will pray without ceasing for safety and endurance for our incredible and selfless heroes and ‘sheros’.
Each one of us must examine our current behaviors and actions and evaluate how they impact the healing of our nation, and determine if these behaviours and actions impede or enhance our preparedness for life after this pandemic. Whatever it is we do, it should be rooted in compassion, kindness, love, and hope to ensure the coming together of, and the healing of our communities because that will be how we thank our essential workers who have given so much to us. At the end of this pandemic we should have created a much better world and a much better you and me!
This pandemic has taught me four valuable lessons which have assisted me with ensuring that my actions will have a positive impact and not impede the healing of our great nation:
* THE MOST PRECIOUS COMMODITY ON THIS EARTH IS OUR HEALTH NOT TOLIET PAPER – I make every effort to take incredibly good care of my health each day so as not to be a burden on an already overburdened health care system.
* HOPE IS A HEALER – I spend the majority of my day finding ways to share joyful conversations, messages of inspiration and laughter to as many people as possible through social media avenues. It’s no secret that many people have lost their sense of hope.
* PLAN DON’T PANIC – I am deliberate about having a plan for my work day – routine is important during challenging times (I am an entrepreneur). I am also considering how I can leave my greatest impact on the community at large once this pandemic is over.
*STAY AND PRAY – I am doing my part by washing my hands frequently, staying indoors, social distancing when I go out, and I take every opportunity to lift up, elevate and pray for each and everyone of our essential workers around the world!
What are you doing to do your part?
Thank you, essential workers. I will end with some of the lyrics from Alicia Keyes’ recently released song “Good Job” dedicated to essential workers around the world…
“You’re the engine that makes all things go
And you’re always in disguise, my hero
I see your light in the dark
Smile in my face when we all know it’s hard
There’s no way to ever pay you back
Bless your heart, know I love you for that
Honest and selfless
I don’t know if this helps it, but (Good job)”
